Eid al-Ghadeer, observed on the 18th of Dhul Hijjah, marks the day Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), returning from his final pilgrimage, stopped at a place called Ghadeer Khumm and declared Imam Ali (AS) as his successor before a large gathering of pilgrims. For Shia Muslims, it’s considered one of the most significant days of the year, sometimes referred to as the “Eid of Eids.”
The day is marked with celebration rather than mourning, gatherings, recitation, and reflection on the concept of Wilayah, the spiritual and political leadership entrusted to Imam Ali (AS) and the Imams who followed. Unlike Muharram or Arbaeen, Eid al-Ghadeer is a joyous occasion, which makes it an appropriate time for gifts and festive gatherings.
