The association between black clothing and mourning isn’t unique to Shia Islam, but it carries particular weight in the context of Muharram and the remembrance of Karbala. Historically, black has been used across many cultures to signal grief, and within Shia practice it became closely tied to the loss of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions.
Rather than being a formal requirement, the practice grew organically as a communal expression of solidarity and sorrow, something worn together at majlis and processions as a visible, shared marker of remembrance. Over time it became one of the clearest visual signals of the Muharram season.
