The first ten nights of Muharram are a period of collective mourning across Shia communities worldwide, commemorating the events leading to Ashura. Traditionally, black clothing is worn as an outward expression of grief, a visual signal of solidarity with the household of the Prophet (PBUH) and their suffering at Karbala.
Choosing what to wear during this period isn’t about fashion, it’s about intention. Simple, modest, black attire is generally preferred over anything flashy or celebratory. That said, comfort still matters, especially if you’re attending multiple majlis (mourning gatherings) a day or traveling to a Husseiniya. Breathable cotton T-shirts in black, ideally with subtle, meaningful designs rather than loud graphics, let you dress appropriately while staying comfortable through long nights of Quran recitation, noha, and lectures.
